If you have a pet dog in your house, then you would have noticed that the dogs pant quite often and the panting that you see makes you wonder if the dog is suffering from shortness of breath or some other kind of disease. Since you do not know the answer, you keep wondering as to why does my dog pant all the time.
There are many reasons for a dog to pant. The dogs pant in spite of the fact that they are inside the house and have all the needed things that make the dog to be pleased. The first thing that you should know is that the panting that is seen in dogs is a cooling mechanism. As the dog pants, it is able to expel the heat that is produced in the body due to normal metabolic function of the various systems in the dog. The panting releases the heat and cools the dog down.
It would help the dog to cool down faster and expel the heat if you are able to provide the dog with proper shade and also some water for the dog to drink. This does not mean that the dogs pant only when they are thirsty. There are times when the dogs pant due to various other reasons too. When the surrounding temperature is very hot too, the dogs can be seen to be panting. The treatment for this is the same as when the dog pants when the metabolism is high. If you provide the dog with shade and water, the panting is likely to reduce and stop.
Other than the heat, the excitement of the dog or the anxiety of the dog can also cause the dog to pant. When the dog is excited due to various causes, then the dog is very likely to pant and this kind of panting will reduce after a period of time. When the dog is anxious too, it can start to pant. In case the dog is anxious for a long time, then you might want to take your dog to a person who trains dogs or a behavioral therapist for animals and they might have a remedy for the anxiety seen in the dogs that leads to panting.
If there is no other sign in the dog, but it is still panting and the panting does not decrease with rest, then you will have to take the dog to a veterinarian for further advice and management.
