Blood pressure refers to the force exerted to the arteries the heart pumps blood to the body. Our blood pressure constantly changes depending on what we are doing. Say for an example, if we’re exercising, blood pressure is more likely to rise and if we’re just relaxing, blood pressure will surely fall down. So what is considered normal blood pressure?
Blood pressure is usually measured while the person is seated on a table with one hand resting on the table. The arm is somewhat bent so that it is in the same level of the person’s heart. Readings are usually measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and is fractional in numerically. The top number or the numerator represents the systolic pressure which describes the maximum pressure in the arteries at rest. On the other hand, the bottom number or the denominator represents the diastolic pressure which describes the minimum pressure in the arteries at rest. The procedure may be repeated for assurance.
Normal blood pressure is less than 120 mmHg for the top number and also less than 80 mmHg for the bottom number. Readings higher than that may indicate signs of hypertension. Low blood pressure by the way is less than 90 mmHg.
Several factors may affect the change in blood pressure. Most likely it would be just be psychological factors such as stress, anger, fear and physical activity may also affect it but there are cases when it is caused by medical complications in the body. Among these are cardiovascular disorders which may include arteriosclerosis which is defined as the hardening of the arteries. Kidney disorders are also a cause since most blood vessels are connected to the kidneys. Pregnant women also have more tendencies for their blood pressure to increase. If you know that your family has history of heart diseases or particularly hypertension, most probably there are chances that you have inherited it and so therefore increasing the risk of having abnormalities. Ultimately, there are still a lot of factors that affect blood pressure readings.
