What Causes Shortness Of Breath

Shortness of breath is a condition that can occur due to a variety of reasons. It can also signify the presence of an underlying disease condition in the person. This is one of the reasons for a person to know what causes shortness of breath. If a person knows the causes, then they will be able to take appropriate preventive measures or treat the condition that caused the shortness of breath.

One of the most common and important causes of shortness of breath is the congestive cardiac failure. A person who has been diagnosed with this condition will have shortness of breath and needs to visit a cardiologist to treat the condition.

Other important causes of shortness of breath are related to the various lung disorders. This is because when a person has lung diseases, the person’s lung can be compromised and will not be able to function optimally. This causes decreased quantity of the Oxygen to be supplied to various parts of the body. This is another common cause of shortness of breath.

The various causes of lung diseases include asthma. A person having asthma will have decreased size of the airway due to the presence of a triggering allergy. This causes the person to have shortness of breath. A person suffering from pneumonia can also have shortness of breath. A person suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases can also have shortness of breath. The main cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is smoking. So smoking plays a major role in causing shortness of breath.

There are times when the lung collapses due to various pressure changes and the condition that commonly causes the collapse of lung is the pneumothorax or air in the lungs. This causes a pressure mismatch causing the lung to collapse. As the lung collapses, there is decreased Oxygen in the system. This causes the person to gasp for air and so shortness of breath occurs in people with collapse of the lungs.

These are the various causes of shortness of breath that a person can suffer from. Most of the causes of shortness of breath need to be addressed as early as possible for a person to be able to become normal again. There are times when the person can have shortness of breath due to carbon monoxide poisoning or even anaphylaxis. These conditions should be treated as an emergency for the person’s life to be saved.
