What Causes Eye Twitching

Eye twitching is medically termed blepharospasm and is the involuntary contraction of the muscles of the eyelids or those under the eye. This maybe caused due to malfunction of nerves that control muscle movement in that region. The reasons for this condition maybe unknown and may last temporarily or accompanied by other symptoms such as dryness in the eyes etc.

Other possible reasons for eye twitching include:

Disorders of the nervous system

Lack of sleep

Fatigue

Anxiety

Irritation in the eye

Stress

Caffeine overdose

Eye twitching can be confused with anther condition called ptosis which is caused due to paralysis or weakness of the muscles of the upper eyelid. However, eye twitching is not is not a life threatening disease and does not get worse over time.

People may experience eye twitching in one or both eyes and this may stop after a good night’s sleep. This disorder may also be due to prolonged exposure to light or sue to glare from television or computer screens. Usually, eye twitching does not warrant a trip to the doctor’s office, it maybe embarrassing and uncomfortable but nothing to worry about. Sometimes eye twitching is also accompanied by other symptoms and should be examined by a doctor. Other symptoms include:

Redness and swelling of the eye
Discharge from the eye
Painful twitches
Prolonged dryness of the eye
Twitching accompanied by blurred vision
Fever
Twitching in other parts of the face as well
Increase in intensity, causing the eyes to close

Try flushing your eyes with water, cold or hot compresses, or a warm bath to relax yourself. Doctors may also recommend some eye drops if the problem persists for some days. In serious cases, medications or surgical procedure may be necessary to cure this condition. Anti-epileptic drugs maybe prescribed or botox may be injected into the eyelid to get rid of eye twitches. In extreme conditions, surgical procedures may be recommended by the physician after thorough examination.

Stress can be harmful and can affect your body in many differ ways. Set aside some time each day to relax yourself. It is also important to give your body and mind some relief from the everyday busy routine.
