What Are The Common Causes of Petechiae

Petechiae is the small pin sized red dots on the surface of the skin, it looks like freckles but instead of black dots it is a red dots. Now that you know how petechiae looks like, you will need to know what are the common causes of petechiae. Unlike freckles, petechia may be an indication to a serious skin condition that requires medical evaluation. Petechia is red in color because it contains blood that has leaked out from the blood vessels into the skin.

Petechiae is usually caused by a low platelet count in the body. Platelets are blood cells that help with the blood clotting. There are several medical condition that cause low platelet counts, lack of vitamin and other minerals in the body can lower the platelet count in the body as well. It is best if you practice healthy diets by consuming foods that provides all the nutrition needed by the body.

One of the most common cause of petechiae is physical trauma to the body such as hard coughing, vomiting, and crying. Especially for crying, if someone cries too hard it can result in facial petechiae that will occur around the eyes area. However, petechiae that is caused by this are completely harmless and will disappear after 3-4 days.

If petechiae is not caused by trauma, it may be a symptoms of low blood platelet counts and is usually suffered by people with vitamin K and C deficiencies. Vitamin K is necessary to the body in order for the production of blood platelets and vitamin C is necessary for the healthy glowing skin as well as to create extra layer in the blood vessel to protect blood from leaking out. The deficiencies of this two vitamins will cause petechiae and if it is not treated properly, it may lead to a chronic medical condition. If petechiae occurs, it is best that you consult your doctor first before making any assumption.

However, when petechiae in children occurs, it maybe dangerous as it usually a significant symptoms to a deadly illness. It can be a sign for meningococcemia, leukemia and low blood platelets count.
