Atherosclerosis is a condition that can occur in any person, but it usually occurs in people of the older age group. The formation of atherosclerosis is predisposed by high cholesterol levels in the individual. This is also called as hyperlipidemia. A person who has been having increased cholesterol will have the arteries filled with fat deposits. An individual who has high levels of Very Low Density Lipoprotein, also called as triglycerides are at a higher risk of having the formation of atherosclerosis. People with increased levels of Low Density Lipoprotein are also at a high risk of getting atherosclerosis.
Atherosclerosis means that the arteries of the individual have a lot of fat that is deposited in the artery walls. A person with high levels of fat that is taken in the food can also have atherosclerosis. Diet forms one of the most important causes of this condition. Increased consumption of fried foods can also cause the individual to have atherosclerosis. As the fat in the body is transported through the artery by the blood, the fat causes damage to the artery walls. Once the artery walls are damaged, the person has the damage increasing over time and the deposition of the fat also increases. This deposition of fat in the artery is called as atherosclerosis.
One fine day, the fat deposition may be too much that it can clog an artery and the area distal to the part is devoid of blood and the part may die. This is how the diet plays a role in causing atherosclerosis and its consequences.
The exercise and fitness levels of the individual may also be another cause of atherosclerosis. This is because when an individual exercises adequately, the fitness levels will increase and the fat that is deposited in the artery walls will decrease. The body will also need more energy and the fat gets absorbed, because of the high amount of energy that it can provide. This is one method of reducing the atherosclerosis that is formed due to lack of exercise. People who are having diseases like diabetes and hypertension also seem to have a higher chance of having the formation of atherosclerosis.
