What Are Shingles – Herpes Zoster Virus

Shingles (Herpes Zoster Virus) are caused by a reactivation of the chickenpox virus, varicella zoster. Most of the time only older people are affected, but sometimes younger people or those with deficient immune systems may develop shingles in their lifetime.

Unlike the rash of chickenpox, which covers huge parts of the body, the rash of shingles usually only affect a smaller area of skin on one side of the body. Up till today there is no cure for shingles, but treatment may help you get well sooner and prevent problems. Have a look at some shingles pictures.

As it is high risk for older people to have shingles and it can be fatal for older people, shingles vaccine, also known as Zostavax can be used in adults age 60 and older to prevent them from getting shingles.
