Cuts and scrapes are very common in our daily life because we do not when accident will happen. Sometimes we may get used to it, we may get cut by the sharp edges by paper, cut when we are shaving and a lot more little accident. Scrapes on the other hand are caused when our skin brushes against rough surfaces or the ground, resulting in skin abrasion. Although scrapes may cover larger skin surface, they are not as dangerous as cuts. Cuts and scrapes may cause infections if they are not being treated properly but how to treat cuts and scrapes?
The severity of the cuts and scrapes does not depend on the larger or smaller skin surface but it depends on the depth of the injury and the amount of bleeding. If the cut and scrapes happen on the area of the body which contain a lot of blood vessels such as head, face, hand and foot, you will see blood gushing out from that area due to the amount of blood vessels in that area.
Cuts and scrapes must be treated properly or they will get infected by bacteria causing it will to take longer time for the cuts and scrapes to heal. Treatment of cuts and scrapes can be done at home as most houses now have their own first aid kit.
Firstly, you must stop the cuts and scrapes wound to stop bleeding. Apply direct pressure to the wounded area by using a clean cloth. Use your finger to apply pressure to reduce the pain for the wounded person. This will stop the bleeding within 5-10 minutes. You can also put an ice pack around the wounded area to stop bleeding.
Once the bleeding stops, rinse and clean the wound under running water, it will be better if you have antiseptic soap. It will sting a little for the wounded person but this is necessary because the dirt will increase the risk of infection and scarring. After you have washed the wound, apply antiseptic cream or solution on the wound and cover the wound using a bandage.
Always remember to keep the wound clean and dry, change the bandage everyday with a new one and you must prevent the bandage from getting wet or dirty. Infections may cause pus discharge, increase pain and fever if the infection is severe enough.
