How To Grill Tilapia

Tilapia is an easy fish to grill but you have to be careful not to break the fish while grilling. The fillets of tilapia are thin and light and take on the flavour of any marinade you apply on it. Avoid flipping the fish more than once as it tends to break. To prevent the fish from sticking to the grill, make sure you wipe the grill clean with a kitchen napkin soiled with oil.

To grill tilapia, first thaw the fish well, if you bought it frozen. Prepare a marinade for the fish. You can select flavours of your choice to prepare the marinade. Asian flavours like soya sauce, ginger, sesame oil, a little chilli sauce make an excellent marinade. Similarly Thai flavours or Indian curry powder can also be used to flavour the fish. Alternately, simple lemon juice, olive oil, chilli flakes and salt also work well with this fish. Do not keep tilapia in the marinade for too long as it starts breaking down the fish.

If you do not want to add oil, take a piece of foil and place the fish in it. Add marinade without oil along with sliced green and red peppers, and onions to the pouch. Close the foil, and place on the grill. The vegetables grill along with the fish and absorb the flavours as well.

Tilapia takes only 3-4 minutes to cook. Take it off the grill when it turns opaque. An easy way to test the doneness of the fish is to test with a fork. When done, the fish turns flaky and easily breaks with a fork.

Grilled fish can be served with vegetables and a little left over marinade drizzled on top. You can dress up this fish by serving with a spicy salsa. It is low in calories and good for people watching their weight. It can also be added to tacos and other dishes. Tilapia is a very versatile fish that can be substituted for other fish like sea bass.
