How To Cook Hamburgers On The Stove

Hamburgers can be made in various ways, grilled on the barbeque in the summer months, or cooked in the oven or on the stove. One important thing to remember about cooking hamburgers is not to make it more than three quarter of an inch to an inch thick. Doing so ensures that when cooked for an optimum time and temperature it does not dry out and remains juicy and delicious.

You can cook hamburgers with ground beef, pork, veal chicken or a combination of meats. The meat can be totally lean or with 10-15% fat. Fat adds moisture and flavour to the meat. You can rid of the excess fat by adding water to the pan while cooking, which helps to remove some of the fat. Also if you are using a non-stick pan, eliminate the oil completely. The patties will cook in its fat.

If you decide to use totally lean meat, compensate with added flavours. Add chopped onions, green peppers, chilli flakes, parsley or cilantro along with ground black pepper, minced garlic, and cheese (optional). Season the patties generously with salt just before adding it to the pan.

Heat the skillet to medium high. Add a little oil (optional, only if you are using 100% lean meat) to light grease the pan. Make round patties with the ground meat mixture. To prevent a round bump on top, press the meat in the centre. Do not add to many patties in one pan, otherwise they take longer to cook. Keep them a few centimetres apart.

Brown the patties on one side and then flip and cook the other side. Cover the pan to avoid any oil from spattering on you. It takes four to five minutes for an inch patty to cook on each side. Let the patties rest of a few minutes to let the meat rest and juices flow. To check of the hamburgers are cooked, cut one in the middle and make sure it’s fully cooked. This is especially important if you are using chicken to make your burgers. Otherwise use a digital meat thermometer.

Serve with buns and your favourite toppings. Popular toppings include slices of onion and tomato, lettuce leaves, olives, pickled peppers, cheddar and swiss cheese slices. The cheese slices can be added on top of the hamburger just before taking it off the stove. This gives the cheese heat to melt and spread before serving.
