How Long Do You Grill Ribs

Ribs are usually grilled slowly and longer at 200-225°F to yield a more juicy and flavourful taste. For grilling, you can use a wide variety of ribs, beef ribs and short ribs, pork spareribs and baby back ribs. Depending on the thickness of the meat and the mode of grilling, ribs can take anywhere form three to five hours to make.

Start by cleaning the ribs well. This includes removing the silvery membrane that prevents the marinade from penetrating the ribs. Marinate the ribs with a dry rub or sauce of your choice.

Dry rub includes a mix of spices and herbs like salt, black pepper, sugar, paprika and garlic powder. Marinades include sauces that help to tenderize the meat.

Wipe the grill clean and with a cloth dipped in oil to make sure the meat does not stick to the grill. Ensure the right temperature is reached before keeping the ribs on the grill. Ribs can be grilled on charcoal or a gas grill. To obtain a smoky flavour, place wood chips wrapped in a piece of foil with slits to the grill. Replace it in between when needed.

When cooking on a charcoal grill, wait till the coals are white and then place the wood chips and the meat. Another technique to make juicy ribs is to place an aluminium tray with water on one side of the grill. Check on the level of the water at regular intervals.

Avoid the temptation to keep checking on the ribs frequently. This opening the lid of the barbeque reduces the temperature and delays the cooking process. After three hours, check for doneness. For beginners, it is best to use a meat thermometer. The temperature of the meat should read 180°F.

Ribs can also be made in slow cooker or boiled. When making it in the slow cooker, roast at 200°F for eight to ten hours. Boiling may be the easiest method for cooking ribs but the one with least flavour. Simmer with onions, bay leaf, garlic, seasonings and water in a large pot for three to four hours. The time taken to boil ribs depends on the cut of meat. Check with a fork after four hours. The meat is done when the meat is tender and falls off the bone. Spread barbeque sauce over the ribs and serve.
