How Long Do You Grill Hamburgers

Grill the hamburgers on high heat for five minutes on each side. Check the doneness of the burgers by using a digital meat thermometer. When cooked to medium, the thermometer reads 160 °F. Overcooking the burger dries it out and makes it very chewy. Undercooking the burger may leave it somewhat raw and harbour harmful bacteria. If cooking for the first time, check one burger from inside and make sure it not pinkish.

To grill hamburgers, start by buying a good quality of meat. Though beef is most commonly used to make hamburgers, other meats such as pork, chicken, turkey or a mixture of two meats is often used. If you prefer lean meat this is a good way to cook meat. Since fat adds flavour to meat, you may need to add more spices and herbs to lean meat to make your burger moist and flavourful.

Mix the meat with chopped onions, minced garlic, egg and bread crumbs for binding, and chopped herbs like parsley or cilantro for fresh flavour. Do not forget to season the meat. If you like spicy burgers, you can add chilli flakes.

The burger mix can be made into patties beforehand and kept in the fridge. This also firms up the patties so that it does not break on the grill. Avoid adding salt at this time; wait till the patties are ready to go on the grill and then season the patties well with salt and pepper.

Heat the grill to medium high. You can use charcoal or gas grill to make the burger. Scrub the grill clean first and wipe with a cloth dipped with oil. This will ensure that your patties do not stick to the grill. The burgers shrink a little while cooking so take that into account when you select your buns. Toast your buns and brush with butter before adding the burger.

To prevent cross contamination, keep the raw meat separate from the cooked burger. Keep a separate plate for cooked burgers. Top burgers with a slice of cheese before serving. When cheese is added to the grilled hamburgers, wait till the cheese melts to take it off the heat. Serve with your favourite toppings.
