How Long Do You Bake A Sweet Potato

Sweet potatoes are baked in a 350-400°F oven, the time depending on their size and whether these are cooked whole or cut into small pieces.

Make sure you keep the sweet potatoes on a baking sheet when you keep it in the oven. They can drip while cooking, and it is better not to keep the sweet potato directly on the grill. You can leave the sweet potatoes unpeeled while baking and to enjoy the crispy skin outside. Prick it with a fork in a few places first. Upon completion add butter or sour cream to the cooked sweet potatoes to add more flavour. Whole potatoes take about 30-45 minutes to bake. Squeeze and check for doneness.

Wrapping whole, unpeeled sweet potatoes in foil steams them, and does not yield a crispy outside. This method works well if you want to prepare mashed potatoes.

Alternately, peel and chop sweet potatoes into pieces, drizzle with olive oil, garlic and salt and bake till tender. This method takes only 5-10 minutes, and results in baked, caramelized sweet potatoes that can be mashed, served as a side dish or added into another dish like a casserole.

Sweet potatoes can also be cut into long fries or wedges and baked in the oven for 30 to 35 minutes or so till cooked and golden brown. Sprinkle fries with salt and serve.

Sweet potatoes can also be wrapped in plastic and cooked in the microwave for 20-25 minutes till soft. This can be served with toppings like butter, brown sugar, marshmallows, or cinnamon.

Sweet potatoes pies are also favoured for dessert. Bake potatoes as mentioned above, peel and mash them well. Add eggs, brown sugar, cream, and flour, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla essence and whisk well to prepare the pie filling. Prepare the pie crust by mixing graham crackers, brown sugar and butter. Press firmly along the bottom and sites of a pie plate, and bake for 10 minutes in a 350°F oven. Cool and add the pie filling to the crust. Sprinkle some brown sugar on top and bake again for about 40 minutes. Cool and serve at room temperature with whipped cream (optional).

Rich in carbohydrates, sweet potatoes are good for health and provide protein, Vitamin A, C, iron and calcium. Sweet potatoes blend well with spices such as rosemary, cinnamon, nutmeg etc, and served as casseroles, main dishes, salads, dessert sand even as baby food.
