Apple has designed the iPod to be easy for customers to use. Ever since the release of the first iPod, transferring music to an iPod was practically automatic. How do you transfer music to an iPod?
An iPod comes with a USB cable called a Firewire. When a new iPod is connected to the computer with the Firewire, the iPod downloads the songs in the computer’s music library automatically. Users can also download free songs and videos or those purchased through iTunes, Apple’s media store on the Internet.
Some iPods come with a dock that is connected to the computer with a USB cable. The iPod can be placed in the dock when the user wants to sync music to an iPod. The Firewire or USB cable for the dock should be connected directly to the computer. A USB on a desktop computer’s keyboard may not have enough power to charge and sync the iPod.
Many people have songs in their computer music libraries that they do not want to add to their iPods. Apple suggests adding and organizing the music that the iPod user wants to download in iTunes. In the iTunes library, the user can add music from the iTunes store or from the computer music library.
When the iPod is connected to the computer for the first time, the user is directed through the setup process. The iPod user has the choice of automatically syncing the iPod or manually adding files to the iPod. If the user wants to pick and choose what they want to add to the iPod from the iTunes library, the user can choose to do a manual add by deselecting “Automatic Syncing” under “Settings.”
To manually add and delete files from the iPod, the person will select and drag the files. For files in iTunes that the person wants to add, the user needs to click and drag the name of the file to the iPod. The user may also choose to sync specific playlists, artist, or genres to the iPod instead of adding individual songs.
To do so, the user would connect the iPod to the computer and open iTunes. The iPod would select “Sync music,” and then choose “Selected playlists, artists, and genres.” Then, the user would select the playlist, artist, or genre that the user wants to add to the iPod. In addition to adding songs to iPod, the user can add videos and movies.
