How Do You Know If You Have Herpes

Usually in any disease, the common signs and symptoms are the method by which a person can identify the presence of a disease and then seek appropriate treatment. The common signs and symptoms of herpes should be the method of identifying if you have herpes and is the answer for the question how do you know if you have herpes. The various signs and symptoms may vary subtly from person to person and is sometimes very difficult to identify.

Actually, there are two different strains of the virus that causes herpes. One of the strains is called as Herpes Simplex Virus 1 and the other is called as Herpes Simplex Virus 2. The Herpes Simplex Virus 1 is the cause of oral herpes disease and the Herpes Simplex Virus 2 is the cause of the genital form of the disease. Of the above two types, the first one or the oral type of the disease is more common than the next one.

There are various signs and symptoms that are present by which you can identify if you have herpes. The most common method of identifying the presence of genital herpes is the presence of skin lesions. These skin lesions occur in the genital area and may also spread to the inner thigh and even the anus. These lesions are itchy and can sometimes cause some kind of discharge. After this phase, there can be open wounds that occur in the area of the lesions that finally heal and forma scar in the area. Men and women can have discharge from their penis and vagina respectively.

In the people who suffer from the Herpes Simplex Virus 1 that causes oral herpes can also have similar kind of symptoms with erythema over the skin near the mouth. This skin lesion on the face can become an open sore at times. This is a sign of the presence of the oral herpes.

There are many other associated symptoms that mean that you are affected by the herpes virus. These include pain over the area, headache, body ache, fever and various other symptoms that are commonly associated with viral infections. These cannot be used as a sign to know that you have herpes because these signs are seen in many conditions that are viral in nature. So to know that a person has herpes infection, the usual practice is to identify the condition with the oral and genital skin lesion symptoms listed above.
