How Big Is A Nanometer

The world is rapidly growing in terms of technology and telecommunication. There have been rapid strides of development because of the use of high technology. The quality of life of all people has improved drastically. The size of every electronic item is shrinking. All these have been possible to the nanotechnology that is being used. When one hears the word nanotechnology and nanometer, one wonders as to how big is a nanometer.

It is not easy to measure the length of a nanometer. This is because of the very small size of the nanometer. Anything that is very small is said to be a nano. Recently one of the smallest passenger cars was rolled out in India and it was called as a Nano. It was a nano not only in terms of the size, but also the cost. Similarly nanotechnology is the use of very small sized particles in making various electronic items to work.

One might have wondered as to how big is a nanometer because nanotechnology has been used in making computer chips that have grossly reduced the size of computers and even every other electronic item. Actually the nanometer is one billionth of a meter. This means that a nanometer is equal to 1/1,000,000,000th of a meter. It is a very small size. To make it easier for a person to understand the size of a nanometer, it can be said that it cannot be seen by normal vision because of the very small size. Any object in the size of a nanometer can only be seen with the use of powerful atomic microscope, or a scanning probe microscope, because of the small size.

The atoms and molecules are very small and so they are measured in nanometers. All the very small objects are usually measured in nanometers. It would be easy to understand if one understands that the width of a hair is about 100,000 nanometers. This is not the length of the hair, but the width. So one is able to actually understand how big a nanometer is.

A nanometer is actually 1000 times smaller than a micro meter.
1 inch is about 25.4 million nanometers.
The thickness of a paper is about 100,000 nanometers.
An atom is usually smaller than a nanometer and measures 0.1 to 0.3 nanometers.
Even a virus that cannot be seen by the naked eye is as big as 30 to 50 nanometers.
